As on date 19/03/2019 there seems to be a one time online process to update the name of the child without visiting the zonal corporation office. You might need to upload the documents after OTP verification. I have not tried it. Please try and update in comments.

ORIGINAL PROCESS - 2016

I was recently blessed with baby boy on Jun 2016. I just wanted to share my experience in obtaining Birth Certificate from chennai corporation and to include name in birth register.

As usual I was curious to understand the process of obtaining birth certificate from chennai corporation for new born. But I could not find any good site or write up which cleared my doubts. That is when I made my mind to write a blog once I obtain BC for my baby.


1. New Born birth registration will be done by the Hospital where you deliver the baby.
2. Parents must submit ID proof and complete the application which will be provided by hospital and submit it in the hospital.
3. Hospital will register the birth with Chennai Corporation  and get the registration number.
4. You can do a basic search in corporation birth certificate :

by providing the gender and Date of birth after 1 or 2 weeks after birth.
5. At this point the online BC will have only father name and mother name along with Place and DOB.
6. This BC will not have baby name since the baby name would have not been kept till now. All the birth will be initially registered only with Parents Name.
7. If you cannot find the BC online after search , check your hospital and enquire if they have registered it and confirm.
8. Once you see the registered Birth of your baby in the site, download the online BC and print it.
9. Chennai corporation has 15 zonal offices and identify the zone office under which the hospital of delivery falls.  This will be conveyed to you by the maternity hospital where you delivered.


At the zonal corporation office.  (Ethical Way)

1. Take a copy of BC , ID proof for both Mom and Dad, Address Proof (Ration Card, Adhaar), Marriage Certificate.
2. Go to counter for Birth / Death registration and say you want to add baby name to birth register.
3. The representative will provide you with a form to fill. This is the form in which you must provide Baby name and undertaking that you would not change the baby name in future. You have to fill the name in English though the form is in Tamil.
4. Submit the form along with BC, ID proof, Address proof, MC etc to the representative. (No fees) If the period is beyond a month of birth then a fee of Rs.5 is applicable.
5. You baby name would be added and keep checking after a week in same site

The baby name must have been added anywhere between a day to a week.  Good Luck.

(Unethical way)

Though the above process is what one should normally follow and which I too wanted to follow. I could not.

As explained, I too took copies of all required documents and visited zonal office (ZONE 9) Behind Valluvar Kottam . My baby was delivered in Cloud Nine T Nagar.

The representative Mr.X at counter promptly gave me the form to fill and when I was about to hand over the form with all supporting documents,  He said he does not want any documents just application will do and he signaled me in typical office style to give money.

I did not expect this blatant and outright way of requesting money so to double confirm  I asked Mr.X if it is the fees. He said it is not fees and this is free service. Hence I understood what he meant.

Now I was confused what is the amount he is asking or expecting. As I was back from UK and after spending in pounds I was really not aware of the norms in bribe and I did not really want to bribe at first place.

Hence with hesitation I pulled an 100 rupee note and gave it to him saying to my mind that it is not bribe but just a gift you share for new born (Just to console my inner conflict).  Again I felt 100 is too less for a bribe and second thing is I did not want to confront with him and create troubles in a much simpler process.

Mr.X promptly received it and I again forced him to take the supporting documents which he again refused saying dont worry it will be done. I made sure the name is clear and they dont make any mistake. The data entry guy read out the name for me and he said it is clear.

Mr.X loudly said "Go home sir and check on Monday , it would have been updated"  (I applied on friday)

I came back home and the same day night just checked out of curiosity and to my surprise it was updated with baby name.


It is upto you to follow either of this approach. But to me it looked simple in anyways.

I applied for my second son in Ambattur Zone office. This time it was even much simpler. Just a form was handed over by a clerk and she said to fill the registration number and other details. I filled it and she asked me to leave it on a table where such applications are piled up. Looks like the actual incharge for this activity does not stay in office and he will come only by 4 PM. I was little skeptical to leave a form at someones desk without any acknowledgement. But I could see similar forms left over and hence I too placed my form and left the office.  2 weeks later it was updated. NO MONEY GIVEN.
